In a 100-page brief filed with the Supreme Court, Aereo claims recording broadcasters’ free, over the air signals does not violate copyright law, and that its service is “the next technological step.” Expressing confidence that Aereo would prevail in the case, CEO and founder Chet Kanojia said in a statement, “Since the beginning of television, consumers have had a fundamental right to watch over-the-air broadcast television using an individual antenna, and they have had the right to record copies for their personal use since the U.S. Supreme Court Sony Betamax decision in 1984.” Court date: April 22.
